Celebrate Two Heroes This Veterans Day: Our Veterans and Service Dogs

Today is Veterans Day, a day to celebrate the service, and honor the sacrifice of our heroes.

Although our gratitude cannot be expressed in words, not only today but everyday, we partner with Smoky Mountain Service Dogs in an effort to honor the service of these brave men and women.

Smoky Mountain Service Dogs is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of wounded vets, with highly trained service dogs at no cost to the vets. Giving them the opportunity to reenter the world with independence.

Smoky Mountain Service Dogs is bringing the best out of man’s best friends.

A service dog can provide the assistance needed to regain hope and independence for a veteran making a fresh start after an injury. Beyond much-needed physical assistance, a canine companion's love, loyalty, and cheerfulness can have a profound and long-lasting impact on someone dealing with emotions that are difficult to communicate.

Veteran recipient Chad Farley describes his experience with his service dog, “ … When I first got him, I couldn’t do much for myself. Now, he can bring my medicine, and if I need a drink, he goes to the fridge, opens the door, gets the drink, shuts the door and brings it to me.”

U.S. Air Force Veteran and Smoky Mountain Service Dog recipient Cheryl Happel shares, “ … Smoky Mountain Service Dogs gave me a promise of hope. I could be that individual that stood before the trauma again. Soon enough, I was able to find myself again with a wingman by my side.”

Assistance with activities that would otherwise prove difficult for individuals with physical disabilities can radically change their outlook on life.

Smoky Mountain Service Dogs supports veterans with:

Opening and closing doors
Fetching items
